Needles or bullets
they both pierce the fabric
of the heart
one with love
the other with hate

You sat there every evening
embroidering a future smile on my face
and soul
for eternity
and they came one evening
and embroidered pain on my heart
for mortality

I shall embroider my words on their bullets
and send them back
to their wicked souls…

I can still hear your laughs
and see your smile
that is why I am going the extra mile…

I always feel your presence
in this house
in my essence
in your absence
from social gatherings
and the narrow streets leading to the houses of the oppressed…

Your needlework is not finished yet

Once Again Israel is Being Rewarded (by Samia Khoury)

The vote to accept Israel into the Organization for Economic Co-operation and development (OECD) while it continues to violate Palestinian Human rights and to flout UN resolutions, indicates that something is very wrong in the values of the world community. But then politics have never had moral values, and that is why the world is in such a mess.

While the siege on Gaza has been allowed to continue for over 3 years simply because Hamas won the elections in a democratic process, and while further sanctions are being considered against Iran for its nuclear activities, Israel continues to enjoy a free hand in the Palestinian Occupied Territories. It also enjoys the privilege of not signing the non-proliferation agreement nor having its nuclear facilities inspected. Once again Israel is being rewarded.

Today Israel is celebrating Jerusalem Day according to the Jewish calendar. It is the day Israel unilaterally annexed East Jerusalem to West Jerusalem after the June 1967 war as “The Eternal United Capital of Israel.”. Until 1948 West Jerusalem had a Jewish minority as it was the residential section of Palestinians who were evicted from their homes or had to run away out of fear for their lives after the massacre of Deir Yaseen. As if dispossessing the Jerusalemites in 1948 was not enough, Israel now continues to chase them out of their homes and property in East Jerusalem, where they have taken refuge or were they had always been living . Under different pretexts, and by unjust laws created by Israel and applied by its own court system, Palestinians are left helpless and homeless.

Our gift on this special day came through the announcement of the establishment of two Israeli settlements within East Jerusaelm One behind the YMCA and the American Consulate, and the other in the Old City near Al-Aqsa mosque. A special report by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) was issued today as well, indicating that Israel has already confiscated 24,500 dunums of Palestinian land which is the size of one third of East Jerusalem. (4 dunums = 1 acre) During 2009 alone, Israel has demolished 80 homes leaving around 300 of their Palestinian inhabitants homeless. That is aside from the ongoing onslaught on the Sheikh Jarrah quarter and the Bustan area in Silwan.

Mr. Obama, in the meantime sends us harsh messages not to flout the indirect talks. It is yet beyond me why on earth did we Palestinians accept to pursue those negotiations when every member of the Palestinian Authority and the negotiating team had so adamantly announced earlier that there will be no negotiations unless the settlement activity stops. Of course Mr. Obama himself had to bow to Israel when its prime minister simply ignored the request, so did the Palestinian Authority think that they would be up to that challenge? Not Surprisingly, such a serious decision was not taken by a unanimous PLO vote but by a simple majority.

On the other hand why did we need the blessing of the Arab countries when they had already offered Israel a perfect deal in the 2002 summit in Beirut whereby all Arab countries were willing to recognize Israel and have diplomatic relations with it provided it ends the occupation. Had Israel been interested in peace, it would have jumped at this offer. That was a generous offer, and the American administration and Mr. Obama should have seized that opportunity to pressure Israel, instead of wasting more time, energy and money on Mr. Mitchell’s shuttle trips. Whether the talks are direct or indirect, they will continue to be futile as long as the component of justice is not there and as long as the right of return is not on the agenda. Over and above, they will be futile as long as Israel continues to be rewarded morally and financially for the dispossession of the Palestinians, and its effect on the whole region.

What can I say!
My words are chained, my thoughts pray,
To the giant spirits behind bars, to their hearts,
To dreams made of tears and clay.

Today Samir and Ahmad become one,
United in hunger they walk the path,
"Death or freedom" is the way.

Today all wounds become one,
Transcending bars and barbwires,
Imprinting shame on the jailer’s forehead.

Oh, Brothers and Sisters of the Inside,
You are freer than we are.
We are the prisoners indeed, of selfishness, apathy, and greed.
We are the ones chained by the illusions of safety.

Today the Inside becomes the outside, the outside the Inside.
Today is now and forever!

I can say no more.

This poem was written on April 17, 2000 yes the struggle and plight of Palestinian prisoners still continues in 2010.

the Spirit of Palestine

tries to separate
hand from land

the source of life

the People of Sakhneen
are rooted in love
and they only fear
God above
the Land for them
is Being
and to be for them
is become a tree
watered from the sky
that brings freedom
from the Mediterranean sea
so come and see

they are true lovers
of a sacred land

* Shakhneen or Sakhnin is one of the main towns inside Palestine 1948 areas, in the heart of the Galilee. The town became famous when its residence revolted against the Israeli Authorities decisions to confiscate thousands of acres from its lands to build Jewish settlements. On March 30, 1976, three of its residence, along with another three from nearby Palestinian villages that joined the revolt were killed by the Israeli Army in what became to be known as the "Day of the Land". This revolt and the memory of the fallen Palestinian martyrs who sacrificed their souls to defend their lands and the dignity of the Palestinian People are commemorated on March 30th of each year.

I have written this poem in honor of a Palestinian delegation from Sakhneen who came to visit Nablus on March 25, 2010. Among the woman and men of the delegation were many who participated in the 1976 revolt (Intifada) of the Day of the Land and who were either injured or imprisoned by the Zionist army. Among them also was the sister of Martyr Khader Khalaileh, one of the six Palestinians who were killed in 1976.

Thanks to my colleague and friend, Mr. Ala Abu Idhair, who invited me to join him in meeting our sisters and brothers from Sakhneen.

وبما أن الخبر يندرج في الإطار الصحي , فمن حقي كطبيب فلسطيني أعيش على الأرض الفلسطينية أن أتوجه باللوم والنقد لحضرتكم ودفاعا عن مهنة الطب في بلدي

السيد الرئيس : كنت ,وفي أكثر من مكان , قد وجهت النقد للمؤسسة الصحية وللسياسة الصحية في مناطق السلطة , ولكن هذا لا يعني , إطلاقا, أننا نفتقد للأطباء المميزين والمستشفيات المميزة , وإنما ننتقد سعيا للأفضل والأكمل

إن أطباءنا يتمتعون بمهارات عالية لا تقل , بأي حال من الأحوال عن زملاءهم في الدول المجاورة, وان مستشفياتنا الخاصة والحكومية تستطيع استقبالكم وصحبكم أحسن استقبال وتقديم أفضل الخدمات والرعاية والراحة .إن أبناءكم أولى بكم وبثقتكم وهم يتساءلون (وعن حق)لماذا كلما عطس أو زحلق أو التوى كاحل أحدكم هرعتم إلى الخارج للعلاج؟ونحن هنا لا نتكلم عن المصاريف والتكاليف والأموال التي تصرف على العلاج في الخارج( على أهميتها القصوى) وإنما نتحدث عن الثقة بالنفس وبالشعب. فما دامت ثقتكم بشعبكم وأبناءكم وأطباءكم مهتزة إلى هذا الحد , فلماذا تطلبون ثقتهم لانتخابكم وتنصيبكم عليهم ؟

السيد الرئيس : لا ادري مدى خطورة الوضع الصحي الذي آلت إليه الأمور معكم وما نوع الإصابة ,ولكم طبقا لما وردنا من خلال وسائل الإعلام فإننا نتكلم عن رضوض , يستطيع أي طبيب في أي قرية فلسطينية علاجكم ورعايتكم والاعتناء بكم

طبعا , لا اكتب لكم مستفزا ولا متشفيا , فا لموضوع ليس شخصيا ولا سياسيا ,ففي السياسة انتقد نهجكم باستمرار,ولكن وبعد أن تكررت هذه التصرفات من قبل القيادة الفلسطينية فقد آن الأوان لان نرفع صوتنا ( نحن معشر الأطباء)لتنبيهكم . لقد صادف , وانأ ازور بعض الأطباء – الأصدقاء في البلدان العربية, أن التقي ببعض القيادات الفلسطينية في عياداتهم للعلاج من أمراض بسيطة جدا,وكأننا في فلسطين نعيش طبيا في القرن التاسع عشر,وحضر لعيادتي العشرات منهم طلبا لتقرير طبي للحصول على تحويل من اجل العلاج في الخارج من أمراض يتوفر في بلدي الإمكانيات والكفاءات لعلاجها. إننا نشعر وانتم تتحدثون عنا – نحن معشر الأطباء في فلسطين – بازدرائكم لنا ولإمكانياتنا , إذن لماذا تسمحون لنا بممارسة مهنة الطب وعلاج المواطنين الفلسطينيين العاديين

ولا يفوتني , في هذا المقام على توجيه اللوم والعتاب إلى السيد وزير الصحة ونقيب الأطباء لصمته المطبق إزاء تصرفات القيادة في هذا المجال.وختاما ,لكم ولصحبكم نقول تواضعوا قليلا, ففراشنا قصير ,لكن اعتزازنا بأنفسنا وبعلمنا وإمكانياتنا كبير وكبير جدا

You are not what you buy, but what you buy matters, and nobody with a fully developed sense of morality would willingly and consciously support a system of exploitation, theft, brutality and apartheid. Unfortunately, a lot of us do.

If we wish to adhere to any form or concept of 'sustainable development' then we need to take responsibilty for our actions, and the consequences of our purchases.

This is why the Global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) has been calling for a consumer boycott of Israeli goods, services and products.

The BDS movement argues that such sanctions are necessary because governments, especially those in Europe and North America, have failed to intervene and impose economic, cultural and political sanctions against the Israeli state for continued violations and crimes against international law, human rights, and humanity.

There are many retailers and outlets in the UK that sell not only Israeli produce, but also produce grown on land in the Occupied Territories, often labelled as 'Produce of Israel.' A product barcode beginning with 729 denotes Israeli origin.

Many might feel uncomfortable with the idea of boycott, but all of us have moral principles which we aim to adhere to, though a depressingly small number of us act upon those principles by not purchasing, for example, goods made with child labour, cosmetics developed through animal testing, or products that aid in the destruction of the rainforests. If the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against South African apartheid could have been rationalised and justified then so can a boycott of Israeli apartheid.

It is difficult to profess support for childrens rights whilst purchasing goods that ensure children are denied the chance to attend school and attain a decent education, or support animal rights whilst buying unnecessary goods made with the suffering of animals, or call yourself an environmentalist whilst buying produce that directly results in the destruction of the rainforest and you certainly CANNOT call yourself an advocate of human rights whilst willingly and consciously purchasing goods that support apartheid, colonialisation, exploitation and theft.

بينما يقوم معظم دول العالم بلغاء ضريبة المغادرة، ما زالت السلطة الفلسطينية تفرض باتفاق مع الاسرائيليين ضريبة خروج عالية قيمتها 143 شيكل على كل فرد. أي إذا سافرت أم مع خمسة أولادها تدفع 858 شيكل، ما يفوق 230 دولار أمريكي (ضريبة فقط)

وعندما طالبت حملة كرامة من الرئاسة ورئاسة الوزراء إلغاء قيمة هذه الضريبة، أجابتنا السلطة بأن هذه الرسوم تأتي بناء على اتفاق باريس الاقتصادي والذي يقضي بأن يذهب نصف هذه القيمة للاسرائيليين والنصف الآخر للسلطة الفلسطينية. فقلنا لهم أنه باستطاعة السلطة طلب تعديل الاتفاق وإلغاء رسوم الضريبة

الغريب أنه لا يوجد إجابة عند أحد في السلطة لماذا يتم جباية هذه الضريبة؟ فوجود الاسرائيليين أصلاً غير شرعي على الجسر كما تقول السلطة، وهذه نقطة عبور بين فلسطين والأردن، فلماذا ندفع كل هذه الملايين سنوياً للاسرائيليين على حساب المواطن المعدوم. وهل يعقل أن ندفع للاحتلال ثمن موظفيه وجنوده الذين يقومون بإذلالنا وإهانتنا؟ ولن نستعجب أن تطلب السلطة الفلسطينية من المواطن الفلسطيني الغلبان أن يدفع في الأيام القادمة رسوم على كل حاجز اسرائيلي يعبره؟

تكون السلطة الفلسطينية واهمة إذا اعتقدت أن حملة كرامة ستكتفي بإلغاء العشرة شواكل التي كانت تفرضها بلدية أريحا، مقابل أن تستمر في جني ملايين الدولارات على حساب المواطن الفلسطيني المعدم. لن نكل ولن نمل ولن نستسلم حتى يسافر المواطن الفلسطيني بلا رسوم مطلقاً من فلسطين إلى الأردن والعودة بحرية وكرامة. وإذا أرادت السلطة الملايين فلتأخذها من الدول المانحة التي تسعد بدفع المبالغ عوضاً عن الاحتلال الاسرائيلي

As geographers, faculty, students, academic scholars, and people of conscience, we are profoundly dismayed by IGU’s decision to hold its July 2010 regional conference in Tel Aviv, in violation of the widely endorsed Palestinian civil society call for Boycott, Divestments, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel. We are equally troubled by IGU’s response [1] to the open letter issued by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), which urged the Executive Committee to relocate the upcoming regional conference out of Israel [2].

PACBI’s letter was a compelling reminder that Israel’s academic establishment (and geography in particular) is implicitly and explicitly complicit with the Israeli state’s colonial, discriminatory, and oppressive policies towards Palestinians. As important social institutions they advance, sustain, and provide the intellectual and moral justification for Israeli actions against Palestinian people and their representatives both within Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories. It is noteworthy that “no Israeli university or academic union has ever taken a public position against the occupation, let alone against Israel‘s system of apartheid or the denial of Palestinian refugee rights.”[3] PACBI underlines the prevailing, and deeply disturbing role of Israeli Universities in developing the very weapons and military doctrines used against Palestinians. Moreover, they highlight the tragic irony of geographers holding a conference about “Bridging Diversity in a Globalizing World” in a country built on urban destruction and gradual ethnic cleansing, a state which defines itself as an exclusively Jewish state, not a state of all its citizens, one that continues to violate human rights with total impunity and stands accused of war crimes for its latest offensive in Gaza [4].

The IGU Executive’s response claims that they are “morally and possibly financially bound to honor the commitment the IGU made to its colleagues in Israel” in 2000. Pragmatic impediments to relocate such an event are understandable yet solvable. It is however far less clear what the executive means by the ‘moral’ standard that binds them to ignore the widespread international outcry against Israel’s longstanding mistreatment of the Palestinian people as well as the open calls for support by Palestinians in their quest for basic justice. Against these concrete ethical imperatives the Executive Committee invokes its statutes, which proscribe boycotts, along with the guidelines of ICSU (International Council for Science) on the free circulation of scientists. Yet, we know that statutes are open to amendment in the face of critical circumstances and geographers have, over the last five decades, debunked positivist reductionism and struggled successfully to free our discipline from the false ‘objectivity’ of traditional science. The fact of Israel’s colonial and apartheid system, the oppression of the Palestinian people, including the denial of their inalienable rights, the irrational violence against and enclosure of the people of Gaza along with widespread international condemnation are ample and pressing reasons for cancelling or relocating the Tel Aviv conference.

The IGU Executive says they are concerned that the Boycott forecloses the possibility of debate and feel “the most effective way to resolve policy and political differences allegedly justified by science is through direct and open confrontation of the conflicting ideas and their proponents”. These arguments are based on three crucial misconceptions. First, the assumption that the relationship between Israel and Palestine is a symmetrical one ignores the overwhelming economic, social, military and political power of Israel relative to the poverty-stricken, war-ravaged state of the Palestinian people, their state and its institutions. A historical colonizer-colonized relationship along with the constant threat of military assault robs Palestinians of their basic livelihoods let alone the privilege and right to disagree politically or otherwise. Secondly, the intimation that the Israeli-Palestinian question is about “policy and political differences” and therefore not the concern of geographers since politics and science are two pure and separate spheres is an anachronistic vision of the discipline, and an insult to the very many geographers around the world whose work does not adhere to that simple binary and is ethical, policy-oriented and/ or politically engaged. And thirdly, the suggestion that Boycotts are not effective or legitimate is decisively invalidated by the example of South African anti-apartheid movement, which shows it to be among the most useful and least violent tactics in resisting oppression and injustice at an international level. A rising tide of International support for the Palestinian boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign calls on us to take a similar stance in the case of Israel.

To date all other forms of international intervention have failed to convince or force Israel to comply with international law and to end its repression of the Palestinians. As educators and intellectuals we must take exception to the impunity with which Israel has targeted Palestinian educational rights. Since its establishment Israel’s policies have been aimed at the destruction of Palestinian historical manuscripts, journals and books [5], suppression of academic freedom and closure of Palestinian universities [6], mobility restrictions on staff and students [7], destruction of educational infrastructure [8], systematic discrimination against Palestinian students [9], as well as arrest and deportation of local academic and international staff [10]. The latest example of these policies in our field is the travel ban imposed by Israel on geographer Khalil Tafakji, Director of the Cartographic Section of the Arab Studies Society in Jerusalem, and regular lecturer in international forums about Israel discrimination and ethnic cleansing policies in East Jerusalem [11].

In light of the above, and in the tradition of engaged scholars such as the well-respected late James M. Blaut whose intellectual efforts were guided by solidarity with oppressed people including the Palestinian people and South African anti-apartheid groups, we the undersigned, believe that it is our moral responsibility as scholars, intellectuals and activists to talk truth to power against injustice. In this spirit of international solidarity and resistance to oppression we stand in support of Palestinians’ non-violent anti-colonial struggle through a public campaign of boycott divestments and sanctions.

Historically, geography as a science was established and consolidated in direct service of European imperial and colonial expansion. The discipline's critical turn in the latter 20th century has worked to expose and repudiate this history and its militaristic and colonial tradition. It is in this spirit that we, the undersigned, collectively petition the IGU Executive Committee to take immediate steps to relocate the July 12 – 16, 2010 regional conference outside Israel. Given the circumstances if the conference goes ahead inside Israel we will not attend or otherwise participate in any manner.

We the undersigned, scholars and people of conscience, urge you to act promptly and ethically in this matter.

During the weekly protest in the Palestinian village of Bil'in, thousands of activists assembled to celebrate five years of non-violent resistance. This form of popular struggle has spread to many other Palestinian villages and areas in East Jerusalem. The protests are made to show opposition to the confiscation of roughly half of the village's land by the Israeli Jewish-only settlement colony of Modi'in Illit. In 2007, after the village protested every Friday for almost 3 years, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that the barrier does not serve a security purpose and ordered it rerouted. The Israeli army however, did not start to reroute the barrier until last week and informed the village that it will only return 364 (or 60%) of its 575 taken acres. During this week's protest the army fired dozens of tear gas canisters, shock grenades, and sprayed the crowd with liquid smelling like sewer and feces.

As Israeli soldiers we hang our heads in shame over last year's attack on Gaza's civilian population. Dialogue, not war, is needed
The Israeli media marked the one-year anniversary of Operation Cast Lead, the war on Gaza, almost as a celebration. The operation is recognised almost unanimously in Israel as a military triumph, a combat victory over one of Israel's deadliest enemies: Hamas.

As combat soldiers of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), we have serious doubts about this conclusion, primarily because hardly any combat against Hamas took place during the operation. As soon as the operation started, Hamas went underground.

Most casualties were inflicted on Palestinians by air strikes, artillery fire, and snipers from afar. Combat victory? Shooting fish in a barrel is more like it. Operation Cast Lead consisted essentially of bombing one of the most crowded places on earth, striking civilian targets such as homes, schools and mosques, and ultimately leaving a trail of more than 1,300 casualties, mostly civilians, over 300 of whom were children. As soldiers of the IDF reserves, we bow our heads in shame against this hideous attack on a civilian population.

As for the goals of the operation, these too are questionable. Allegedly, operation Cast Lead was intended to stop the firing of missiles by Hamas. But the Qassam missile problem had been solved before the operation started. The ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel in place from 19 June 2008 had resulted in a drastic reduction of missiles fired from Gaza from a few hundreds per month to about a dozen for a period of five months. It was Israel that never lived up to its end of the bargain to end the siege of Gaza, breached the ceasefire in November 2008 by attacking targets in the Strip, essentially ignored Hamas's proposal to renew the ceasefire, and eventually began operation Cast Lead a few weeks later.

The true goal of this operation was different from the one announced by Israeli officials. The real objective was not to stop the Qassams but to overthrow the Hamas government. As such, the operation failed. Hamas in Gaza is stronger than ever.

A year after this brutal war, a change of strategy is needed. Israel should commence immediate talks with Hamas, negotiating not only a ceasefire but also the "core issues" to be part of an end-of-conflict agreement. An open dialogue with Hamas is clearly in Israel's interest.

First, because Hamas was democratically elected in Gaza and has won the trust and respect of a significant part of the Palestinian people, anyone hoping to resolve this conflict will eventually need to bargain with the group.

Second, Hamas has proven capable of delivering peace and quiet to the citizens of southern Israel. As demonstrated before, Hamas has a strong hold on all organisations acting in Gaza and can enforce a truce.

Third, a prisoner exchange deal is our only chance to bring back the abducted IDF soldier, Gilad Shalit. In return, Israel will release hundreds of Hamas prisoners, out of the 8,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Such a deal can have a pacifying influence on public opinion both in Israel and in Palestine and can be an important step towards reconciliation between the two peoples.

Hamas is currently Israel's enemy, but peace is made with enemies, not with friends. Hamas is also a powerful, pragmatic and well organised movement, possibly a future partner with whom Israel can "cut a deal". A reluctance to recognise Hamas as the party in charge in Gaza is a strategy that failed and needs to be replaced. A nation that is truly looking for peace cannot afford to ignore its partners.

On the anniversary of the release of Mr. Nelson Mandela, Mr. Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister said: “His story reminds us that there is no corner of the earth so far away, no injustice so entrenched, no enemy so powerful that people of good conscience cannot campaign for, change and win”
Indeed how very true. And thanks to Mr. Brown for pointing that out, because it certainly gives us -Palestinians- some hope, especially that Palestine is not that far away from Britain. Neither is the long history of the dispossession of the Palestinians unknown to the prime minister at 10 Downing Street. After all the root cause of the tragedy of Palestine started in Britain in 1917 with the Balfour declaration and the British mandate which lasted until 1948.

It would seem to me that Britain should be the first country of conscience to redress the grave injustice “so entrenched” since 1948 and further exacerbated by the occupation of the rest of the Palestinian Territories in 1967. Indeed the enemy has proved to be powerful to an extent that it has marginalized the role of the United Nations, and turned the super powers into a tool that it can manipulate.

People of good conscience are already campaigning for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israel, a campaign similar to the one that brought down the Apartheid regime in South Africa. So I hope that Britain will have the moral courage to set the record straight, and ride the wagon of the BDS, until the occupation comes to an end. Or will the rhetoric we heard on Nelson Mandela’s anniversary of freedom simply wither into thin air, and the “powerful enemy” will continue to gloat over the fact that nobody will dare meddle with its policies?

Carleton students launch major divestment campaign (video, report, articles)

OTTAWA, January 27, 2010 – Carleton students have released a report detailing how the Carleton University Pension fund invests in companies involved in violations of human rights and of international law.

The report was created by Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA – Carleton), who are launching a campaign to end Carleton's unethical investments and adopt a socially responsible investment policy.

BAE Systems, L-3 Communications, Motorola, Northrop Grumman and Tesco supermarkets are the five companies profiled in the report. The report documents how these companies manufacture weapons and weapons components that are used to kill and maim Palestinian civilians, that support the illegal Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and that perpetuate Israel’s illegal siege of the Gaza strip.

“Students are appalled to learn that Carleton is affiliated with companies providing support for illegal military occupation” says SAIA - Carleton member Yafa Jarrar. “We thought our University was guided by more than just the balance sheet.”

Carleton Faculty who have heard about SAIA Carleton’s campaign have been shocked to learn their pension fund is tied into such unethical investments.

“I do not want my pension fund profiting from the sale of Hellfire missiles and Apache Helicopters,” say Trevor Purvis, who teaches Law at Carleton. “By investing in the firms, not only does Carleton violate its own ethical principles, but it essentially makes Carleton complicit in breaches of international law and human rights violations.”

ونظمت المحاضرة في مدرجات الشهيد ظافر المصري في الحرم الجامعي القديم وتحدث فيها أ.ابو حجلة عن العناصر الأساسية للشخصية القيادية وبدأ المحاضرة بطرح معادلة ذهنية تلقي الضوء على موضوع القيادة بشكل عام وهي الرؤية والتحكم والفعل، كما بين الفرق بين مفاهيم الفعل ورد الفعل والفعل المبادر والذي يجب ان يكون منسجما مع الرؤية التي شكلها القيادي

وتناول أ.ابو حجلة موضوع المفهوم التربوي وبين ان التربية بالتعريف مفهوم تنموي تراكمي وان اول ما يعتمد عليه القيادي هو الحصول على المعلومات التي تشكل اللبنة الاساسية للمعرفة والتي تعتبر مدخلا اساسيا للعملية التنموية

كما ركز خلال المحاضرة على موضوع القوة واشار الى ان المعرفة هي من اهم عناصر ما يسمى بالقوة الهيكيلية في المفهوم المعاصر والتي تعتمد بالاساس على التحكم بالامن والتحكم بواسائل الانتاج والتمويل ومصادر التمويل والتحكم بالمعرفة والافكار والمعتقدات

وطرح خلال المحاضرة افكارا تتعلق بالمفهوم القيادي مستوحاة من كتاب العادات السبع للاشخاص الفعالين وهو للكاتب الامريكي ستيفن كوفي وهذه العادات هي: ان يكون الانسان مبادرا وان يبدأ بالهدف اولا وان يضع الاولويات وان يفكر بمبدأ المكاسب المشتركة مع الآخرين ومحاولة فهم الآخرين قبل ان يطلب منهم فهمه وكذلك مبدأ التعاون الخلاق، ومبدأ تجديد وتفعيل الطاقات

وشدد ابو حجلة على المهارات التي يجب ان تتوفر في القيادات ومنها ادارة الوقت والاتصال والقراءة التي تؤدي الى تطوير المعارف بشكل مستمر، كما تحدث عن المهارات القيادية التي يمكن تطبيقها في في كافة مناحي الحياة العامة والخاصة وقطاعات المجتمع المدني وهذا في نظر ابو حجلة موضوع هام وحيوي للمجتمع الفلسطيني وخاصة فئة الشباب

وركز على ضرورة تدريب المدربين ليصبحوا قادرين ومؤهلين جيدا خاصة في مجال العملية التربوية وانتهاج منهجية تعليمية هدفها تعزيز قدرات الطاقات الشبابية من خلال تطبيق مبدأ "البراكسيس" وهي النظرية التي يتم تعديلها من خلال التفاعل مع الواقع

وخلال شرحه لمفهوم التضامن عرف أبو حجلة الإنسان المتضامن بأنة "صديق لفلسطين يعمل من أجل حقوقنا وقضيتنا الوطنية" وأن هناك "جهات متعددة تصتف بجانبنا لُتقوي جبهتنا في معادلة الصراع مع العدو ولتثبيت هويتنا الوطنية

ثم أوضح أن هناك أشكال مختلفة من التضامن، مبينا أن التضامن السياسي يتمثل بالضغط على حكومات الدول لإحقاق الحقوق المشروعه لشعبنا في المنظمات والمحافل العالمية. أما التضامن الاقتصادي فلا يقل أهمية في تعزيز صمود شعبنا على الارض. وأضاف أن أشكال التضامن الاخرى كالتضامن الثقافي والاعلامي والأخلاقي والمعنوي تعتبر روافد مهمة ومتممة للتضامن الاقتصادي والسياسي

البعد التاريخي لحركات التضامن

ثم تحدث أبو حجلة عن تطور الحركات التضامنية مع الشعب الفلسطيني والمراحل التاريخية المتعددة التي مرت بها منذ بداية الإحتلال البريطاني لفلسطين وحتى يومنا هذا. وقال أن في فترة ما بين نكبة عام 1948 وحتى 1967 حصر التضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني في الدول الاسلامية والعربية ومن ثم توسع هذا التضامن ليشمل المعسكر الإشتراكي بعد حرب عام 1967 وإنشاء منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية

انقلاب الصورة

ثم اشار أن الصورة النمطية المشوهة التي رسمها الإعلام الصهيوني عن الفلسطيني كإرهابي بدأت تتغير بعد الاجتياح الصهيوني لجنوب لبنان واحتلال بيروت وقتل وجرح 20 ألف لبناني وفلسطيني وتتويج ذلك بمجزرتي صبرا وشاتيلا التي هزت الوجدان العالمي وحفزت على تشكيل العديد من المنظمات والشبكات التي تدافع عن حقوق الشعب الفلسطيني مثل لجنة 29 نوفمبر والذي أخذت من تاريخ يوم التضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني كإسم لها والتي انطلقت في مدينتي شيكاغو ونيويورك وإنتشرت في معظم المدن الأمريكية الرئيسية ومن ثم تحولت للجنة التضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني

ولفت المتحدث الى أن الانتفاضة الأولى عام 1987 هي التي أحدثت الانقلاب الحقيقي في الصورة بحيث تغيرت صورة "داوود وجالوت" حين واجه "جالوت" الإسرائيلي المدجج بالسلاح "داوود" الطفل الفلسطيني الذي حمل الحجر مقابل البندقية وهنا شاهد العالم بأسره على شاشات التلفاز كيف قام جنود الإحتلال بقتل "أطفال الحجارة" بدم بارد بإستخدام الرصاص الحي وكيف إستخدموا الهروات لتكسيرعظام الفلسطينيين

ثم اردف قائلا "أن تراكم أحداث الانتفاضة وانتهاكات المحتل وجرائمة أعطت جرعة تضامن قوية مع شعبنا في كل من القارتيين الأوروبية والأمريكية والعالم ككل، فصور القتل وتدمير البيوت وسرقة الارض وإقتلاع الأشجار كلها ممارسات هزت ضمير العالم"

بدء التحرك وتنظيم العمل

الاجتياحات وانتفاضة الاقصى ومحرقتي لبنان وغزة أخرجت اصوات كثيرة ضد "إسرائيل"، ولم تعد تنطلي اتهامات اللوبي الصهيوني لمنتقدي جرائم الاحتلال "بالاسامية" على أحد

واعتبر المتحدث عام 2006 بالمفصلي لتنامي وتحالف الجمعيات المتضامنة مع الشعب الفلسطيني واعتبار اسرائيل دولة كولنيالية ودولة نظام فصل عنصري (أبارتهايد) وارهاب بعد سلسلة المجازر واضطهاد الشعبيين الفلسطيني واللبناني، حيث لم يعد بإمكان إسرائيل أن تدعي أن لها الموقع الأخلاقي الأعلى في الصراع، وتكشفت اكاذيبها في اتهام معارضيها بالاسامية لأن غزارة دم المجازر فاق قوة أبواقها الاعلامية في قلب الحقائق

ماذا يحصل في كندا وأوروبا اثر تداعيات محرقتي لبنان وغزة؟

وعن إنطباعاتة عن النشاط التضامني خلال زيارتة لكندا وأوروبا قال الأستاذ أبو حجلة "لقد مكثت 12 يوما في كندا حيث حاضرت أكاديميا وسياسيا في جامعات تورونتو وترنت وكوينز وأتوا ومونتريال، بدعوة من (التحالف ضد نظام الفصل العنصري الإسرائيلي) المتكون من مجموعة أصدقاء ونشطاء زاروا فلسطيين وشاهدوا عن كثب بأم أعينهم ما يجري على الارض من جدار وحصار وحواجز وإهانة واجتياحات، ثم أسسوا هذا التحالف الذي يضم في صفوفة الكثير من اليهود الذين يمقتون الصهيونية ويعملون جاهدين لانهاء الإحتلال ونظام فصله العنصري. كما نوة للدور الريادي التي تقوم بة مؤسسة التضامن من أجل الحقوق الانسانية للشعب الفلسطيني والتي لها فروع كثيرة في كندا

وأفاد بوجود تحالف ضخم جدا في في مدينة مونتريال يحوي الكثير من المؤسسات الكندية والعربية ويعرف التحالف الان باسم (تضامن) ويعمل لتوسيع وتعميق الحملة الدولية لمقاطعة إسرائيل وسحب الإستثمارات منها وفرض العقوبات عليها (BDS) والتي تحظى الأن بدعم كبيرمن قبل حركات التضامن كبرنامج نضالي ضد الأبارتهايد الإسرائيلي

وأعلمنا أبو حجلة عن بعض المؤسسات المترددة للدخول في التحالف لأن الاسرائيليين لديهم حراك أيضا من طرفهم ضد المقاطعة، وأن بعض الكنديين يخافون اللوبي الصهيوني لئلا يوصموا بالاسامية، وغدا بعض السياسيين والنشطاء يخشون ارهاب اللوبي الصهيوني وابتزازه على عكس الاوروبيين الذين ماعادوا يهتموا بهذا الاتهام الذي فقد قوته ومحتواه وبريقه

وفي ذات السياق تحدث أبو حجلة عن مشاركتة في مؤتمر كبير بعنوان (حرية التعبير، حرية التعليم) نظمته أربعة منظمات تضامنية، أعضاءها من الاساتذة والاكاديميين والطلبة، بعضهم طرد من مؤسسته لنقده اسرائيل وممارساتها ضد الفلسطينيين، حيث ركزت المحاضرات على إعادة الاعتبار لحرية الكلام والتعبير والتدريس حول القضية الفلسطينيية دون تكميم الأفواه. وقد شارك في المؤتمر ما يقارب عن 300 شخص معظمهم ينتمون للجهات المنظمة للمؤتمر وهي معلمون من أجل السلام والعدالة وأكاديميون من أجل فلسطين ومدرسون من أجل فلسطين وطلبة ضد الأبارتهايد الإسرائيلي

وتساءل المتحدث؟

هل صدفة أن يتم حجزي في مطار مدينة تورونتو لمدة خمس ساعات؟ وهل صدفة أن توجه لي أسئلة في كندا ليست بالتقليدية، على نمط "هل ستتحدث ضد اسرائيل؟ وهل تحمل في حقيبتك مواد إعلامية ضد اسرائيل؟ وهل ستعقد اجتماعات ضد اسرائيل؟" لقد تيقنت من محاولة ارهابي واسكات صوتي قبل أن اصل لكندا ولربما منعت من الدخول لولا الضغط السريع والاتصالات المباشرة مع دائرة الهجرة في المطار من قبل أصدقائي الكنديين

ولم يقلل المتحدث من أهمية الانجازات التي تمت في كندا لحركات التضامن التي بدأت تنتشر كالنارفي الهشيم بين قطاعات الطلاب والنقابات المهنية والعمالية والكنائس ومؤسسات العمل المدني، وأن هناك عدد كبير من المؤسسات باختلاف تلاوينها وضعت المقاطعة عل سلم أولوياتها

التجربة الأوروبية

أفاد المتحدث أبو حجلة الذي زار أوروبا لمدة شهر أن حملة المقاطعة في اوروبا قطعت شوطا كبيرا، ونقابة الاكاديميين البريطانيين فتحت الباب على مصراعيه، ولم يستسلموا لابتزازهم واسكاتهم من اللوبي الصهيوني، ثم لحقت بها العديد من النقابات الاخرى المهنية والنقابية والطلابية والكنائس وذلك بتحفيز وتنسيق مع لجنة التضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني التي أنشأت نافذة على الإنترنت بخصوص المقاطعة وتسمية البضائع التي يجب حظرها

وقال أنه زار مدينة لكسمبرغ، التي تعتبر غنية ولها ثقل في اوروبا ، بدعوة من لجنة السلام العادل في الشرق الأوسط، وألقى محاضرة عن المجتمع الفلسطيني تحت الإحتلال وذلك ضمن سلسلة محاضرات نظمتها اللجنة في الآونة الأخيرة عن الوضع الراهن للصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي. كما أطلعنا على زيارته لمدينة بازل في سويسرا التي تعتبر مركز انطلاق الحركة الصهيونية بقيادة هرتزل، والتي يوجد فيها اليوم مؤسسة تضامنية لمقاطعة إسرائيل ومن ثم مدينتي لوزان وجنيف، معقبا أن كل هذه المدن فيها تضامن كبير مع الشعب الفلسطيني

الموقف الفلسطيني

وأوجز أبو حجلة الموقف الفلسطيني واصفا اياه بالتشرذم وتفتت موقف الحركة الوطنية الفلسطينية، وأنها تفتقر لبرنامج واضح لمخاطبة الشعوب الاخرى

ثم أشار أن "هناك إرتباك وتساؤلات حتى حول قضايانا المصيرية التي ليس لها رؤية واضحة، لقد سؤلنا عنها خاصة حول الدولة العلمانية الواحدة، وحول آلية المقاطعة التي لا يتم التحدث عنها رسميا، والتي يقوم بها الاوروبيون وغيرهم وفق النداء الفلسطيني للمقاطعة والذي صدر في عام 2005."

ثم اضاف بحرقة "لدينا اشكاليات كثيرة، والمنطق اللاأخلاقي أن نطلب شيء من غيرنا ونحن أنفسنا لا نطبقه."

الخاتمة: نداء

أنهى أبو حجلة مداخلته حول محرقة غزة، وقال أن الدم الفلسطيني الذي سال هناك أعطى وقودا لحركات التضامن التي توسعت وانتشرت بشكل غير مسبوق. ولكن للأسف التخاذل والتواطئ كبير، كما حصل في مسيرة (شريان الحياة لفلسطين)(Viva Palestina) التي تم اعاقتها وكان مخططا لها أن تصل إلى غزة في الذكرى السنوية الاولى للمحرقة، حيث شارك فيها 550 ناشط وناشطة مروا من 10 دول وقطعوا آلاف الأميال للتضامن مع فلسطين. وكذلك مسيرة الحرية لغزة (Gaza Freedom March) التي شارك فيها 1400 متضامن من 43 دوة مختلفة، ولكنهم منعوا من الوصول إلى غزة بعد وصولهم القاهرة حيث قاموا بالتظاهرهناك إحتجاجا على قرار السلطات المصرية ومن ثم أصدروا اعلانا سمي بإعلان القاهرة طالبوا فية برفع الحصار عن غزة ومقاطعة إسرائيل وسحب الإستثمارات منها وفرض العقوبات عليها (BDS) ومحاكمة مجرمي الحرب الإسرائليين.

ورأى المتحدث أن حجم التضامن وصل مراحل متقدمة، وتقع على عاتقنا مسؤليات كبيرة كحركة وطنية لترتيب أمورنا، لأن الوقت من دم والتاريخ لا يرحم.

ماذا نريد من المتضامنين؟

أوجز أبو حجلة المطالب من أصدقائنا المتضامنين بحملة اعلامية واسعة لفضح وكشف الإنتهاكات الإسرائيلية لحقوق الانسان الفلسطيني، وتشكيل مجموعات ضاغطة على اسرائيل، ودعم الحملة الدولية لمقاطعة إسرائيل وسحب الإستثمارات منها وفرض العقوبات عليها، والدعم المالي والاقتصادي لتعزيز صمود الشعب الفلسطيني.

المتحدث الآخر، النقابي الامريكي كالفن كلارك أشار الى زيارته الثانية لنابلس، وقال " قبل ان أتي لفلسطين، قرأت عنها، وعقدت مقابلات حولها، وقد أتيت لهنا في المرة الاولى وراعني الاهانات لشعبكم على الحواجز، وقد أقمت لمدة شهر مع عائلة شهيد كان مهددا بيتها بالنسف، شاهدت الخوف والصبر والمعاناة بعيونهم خلالها عرفت معنى المقاومة، لاني تعرفت على عائلة ثانية لي هي أل خلفة التي تم تدمير بيتها بعد مغادرتي الى بلدي شيكاغو. كنت خائفا أن لا ياذنوا لي بالعودة لآهلي في فلسطين بعد أن غبت عنهم ستة سنوات، وكنت خائفا ان لا أدفع دينا في رقبتي لهذا الشعب العظيم."

"أنا مع حركة التضامن الدولية مع الشعب الفلسطيني، ومعكم مؤسسات كثيرة تعمل عندنا كمؤسسة طلاب من أجل العدالة في فلسطين ولها عدة فروع، ومؤسسات عربية وفلسطينية ويهودية واسلامية تعمل من اجل فلسطين وهناك أيضا التحالف ضد الحرب والعنصرية، وفية نضع شرط لدخول المؤسسات تحت مظلة التحالف بحيث لا نقبل أي مؤسسة جديدة لا توافق على حقوق الشعب الفلسطيني مسبقا."

وافاد المتحدث الامريكي "بحكم موقعنا الجغرافي في مدينة شيكاغو، لقد احدثنا ارباك كبير لشركة كتربلر وأعقنا عقد اجتماع هيئتها العامة هناك، وحرضنا المشاركين بسحب اسهمهم من الشركة، لأن اسرائيل تدمر البيوت الفلسطينية بمعداتها الثقيلة، ونعدكم من جانبنا بأننا سنعيق اجتماعهم في الربيع القادم وسنمنع الاجتماع من الحدوث، وسنفضح ذلك على صفحات الجرائد الاقتصادية، لنؤثر على سمعة الشركة مما سيخفض قيمة اسهمها !"

وأشار الى العمل النضالي مع طلاب من أجل العدالة الذين عطلوا المجرم أولمرت من التحدث في الجامعة لمدة خمسة ساعات ونصف الساعة، وقال "أحدثنا له ارباك داخل القاعة وكنا نربط انفسنا وفق سلسلة بشرية لاعاقة الشرطة، وفي خارج القاعة تظاهر بنفس الوقت أكثر من 300 متضامن تحت المطر الغزير الذي بثته الجزيرة بشكل مباشر."

وانتهت المداخلات بالاجماع على أن الشعب الفلسطيني غير ملزم لخلق برامج وحلول للاحتلال الذي اقتلع شعبنا من أرضة. وأكد المشاركون على ضرورة الخروج من ظاهرة الارباك في الساحة الفلسطينية لكي يتم التناغم مع ظاهرة المد التضامني في الساحة العالمية، فهل من نظرة مستقبلية للتشبيك الوطني والعالمي لموسم حصاد أفضل لفلسطين؟

I have to say that I do not agree with several things in this program and we all have to listen to it critically. Actually, I gave the BBC a long and in-depth interview on Nov. 11, 2009 about my analysis of the current situation, and the fake "economic peace" of Netanyahu in light of the continued Israeli Military Occupation and Apartheid (the siege of Gaza, the ethnic cleansing in Jerusalem, the Apartheid wall, the expansion of Israeli colonies, settler violence, and the continued killing and imprisonment of Palestinians, etc.) but it was not included in this program for editorial considerations.

However, Alan Johnston does say clearly that without ending the Israeli occupation the current calm will collapse as was the case in the first and second intifadas, and he should be commended and thanked for the good effort he put in this program.

Call for Action: Oppose Portuguese Water Deal with Mekorot! Defend Palestinian Water Rights! Uphold International Law!

Israel's national water carrier Mekorot signed a "co-operative" venture with EPAL, the Portuguese water company that serves 2.5 million consumers in the country's capital and the south. The agreement claims to safeguard the Portuguese water system against "terrorist threats", building on Mekorot's alleged "expertise" in the area.

The Portuguese deal is in a reality a thinly veiled attempt for Mekorot to profit from its many years of experience as an agent of Israel's illegal and immoral occupation of Palestine. The deal with Portugal serves as a launch pad for the company to sell its services to the rest of Europe, pumping millions of dollars back to Israel's military apparatus. This money will inevitably be used to consolidate Israel's criminal appropriation of Palestinian water aquifers.

An Amnesty International report published last October accuses Israel of denying Palestinians access to water. "Swimming pools, well-watered lawns and large irrigated farms in Israeli settlements ... stand in stark contrast next to Palestinian villages whose inhabitants struggle even to meet their domestic water needs," reads the report. Israel's daily water consumption per capita is four times higher than the 70 litre per person consumed in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, a number well below the recommended World Health Organization guidelines.

Israel reroutes more than 80 percent of water retrieved from the Mountain Aquifer. This aquifer is the only supply of drinking water for Palestinians, while Israel draws water from other sources, including the Jordan River. Somewhere between 180,000 and 200,000 Palestinians in rural communities of the West Bank have no access to running water. About 90 to 95 percent of Gaza’s drinking water supply has been contaminated with sewage and seawater and is now undrinkable.

The Palestine Solidarity Committee (CSP) in Portugal wrote a letter to EPAL protesting the agreement. The company defended the deal by shirking its responsibility for the faith of the Palestinians. Adding insult to injury, EPAL sacked an employee that expressed dissent, an attempt to curtail freedom of expression inside the organization. Nevertheless, in light of European Union directives in the award of public contracts (2004/18/EC), the company is walking on thin ice and the deal can fall if the right public pressure is applied. Already the Portuguese media has expressed interest in the case. This is an international appeal to activists worldwide to help us curtail Mekorot's expansion into Europe at an early stage.

Demand that EPAL end its agreement with Mekorot NOW!

استشهدت المناضلة شادن برصاص الاحتلال الإسرائيلي الغادر يوم الجمعة 11/10/2002 الموافق 5 شعبان 1423 هـ، بعد عمر حافل بالنشاطات الاجتماعية والشعبية والثقافية والإنسانية. فقد عملت في تربية الأجيال منذ عام 1960 واستنكفت عن التدريس عام 1967 احتجاجا على محاولة سلطات الاحتلال تغيير المناهج الدراسية واستمرت في نشاطها النضالي مع المخلصين الشرفاء لدعم مسيرة شعبها الفلسطيني في تطلعاته للحرية والاستقلال من الاحتلال الإسرائيلي والمحافظة على الهوية الوطنية الفلسطينية على التراب الفلسطيني حيث شاركت الشهيدة في العديد من المؤسسات والجمعيات المحلية والوطنية التي تعمل من اجل العدالة والحرية في فلسطين والعالم

نؤكد أن الشهيدة شادن قتلت بدم بارد، وكان قتلها اغتيالا مع سبق الإصرار والترصد. يعتقد البعض خطأ أن الشهيدة استشهدت برصاصة طائشة وهذا ليس صحيحا. لقد أطلق جنود الاحتلال خمسة عشرة رصاصة على الأقل على الشهيدة وعلى زوجها وابنها اللذين نجيا بقدر من الله سبحانه وتعالى. الرصاصة الأولى كانت موجهة إلى رأس الشهيدة وأخطأتها بعشرة سنتيمترات ولكن الرصاصة الثانية أصابت جسدها الطاهر إصابة مباشرة في خاصرتها اليسرى وكانت من النوع المتفجر المحرم دوليا مما أدى إلى استشهادها على الفور. هذا وقد اعترف الجيش الإسرائيلي عبر وسائل الإعلام بأنه أطلق النار ولكنه قال أن الشهيدة أصيبت بالخطأ. لا يمكن لعاقل أن يصدق أن يتم إطلاق خمسة عشرة رصاصة على هدف معين من مسافة 25 مترا بالخطأ. هذا هو الإرهاب بعينه.. هذا هو الجبن بعينه... هذه هي إحدى جرائم الاحتلال الإسرائيلي ضد شعبنا الأعزل. لقد قاومت الشهيدة شادن الاحتلال بالطرق السلمية وكرست حياتها لمساعدة المتضررين من الاحتلال ولكن عنصرية الاحتلال وفاشيته أرادت أن تسكت صوتها المطالب دائما بحرية شعبها واستقلاله

Seven years have passed and the death squad and terrorist State of Israel is still refusing to admit the responsibility of its cowardly soldiers for the crime of assassination of Shaden Abu-Hijleh. Despite this, the family of and friends of martyr Shaden are still continuing their legal and media campaign to bring the perpetrators to justice and to expose the war crimes of Israel on the international level.

Seven years, and the blood of Shaden is still winning over their bullets; her smile is stronger than their hate, ever-present in the minds and hearts of all who knew her; a torch of hope and love for the wretched, and an honorable example for the strugglers for freedom and human dignity, illuminating the road ahead so we can see our goal clearly and unite for the sake of a free & democratic Palestine, all of Palestine, from the river to the sea, and from the Galilee to Um Al Rashrash.

On October 11th 2002, Shaden Abu-Hijleh (aged 62), a grandmother, peace activist and philanthropist, was murdered in cold blood. Israeli soldiers deliberately shot her without provocation while she was embroidering inside her home in the West Bank City of Nablus. Over 15 hollow-point bullets, which are banned by international law, were shot directly at her and her family killing her and injuring her husband and son.

Shaden was a devout patriot and shared with her Palestinian brothers and sisters the aspiration for freedom and liberation from the Israeli military occupation. She worked for Palestinian independence and the preservation of Palestinian national identity on Palestine's soil. She joined several organizations and association working for freedom and peace in Palestine and around the world. After her sons and daughter graduated from university, Shaden dedicated her life for the sake of achieving political and social justice and became a notable leader in the women's movement in Palestine. She was an active member in several local and national organizations:

• Administrative Committee Member, The Charitable Cultural and Social Society

• Administrative Committee Member, Society for the Safeguarding of Motherhood and Childhood, Nablus, Palestine.

• Founding Member, Ebal Cultural Center for Palestinian Arts and Folklore

• Founding Member, Association for Combating of Smoking and Dangerous Drugs.

• Founding Member, Palestinian Women for Democratic Change.

• Member of the Palestinian National Popular Committees (Responsible for the disbursement of food supplies to needy families affected by Israeli curfews and sieges of Palestinian towns and villages).

استشهدت المناضلة شادن برصاص الاحتلال الإسرائيلي الغادر يوم الجمعة 11/10/2002 الموافق 5 شعبان 1423 هـ، بعد عمر حافل بالنشاطات الاجتماعية والشعبية والثقافية والإنسانية. فقد عملت في تربية الأجيال منذ عام 1960 واستنكفت عن التدريس عام 1967 احتجاجا على محاولة سلطات الاحتلال تغيير المناهج الدراسية واستمرت في نشاطها النضالي مع المخلصين الشرفاء لدعم مسيرة شعبها الفلسطيني في تطلعاته للحرية والاستقلال من الاحتلال الإسرائيلي والمحافظة على الهوية الوطنية الفلسطينية على التراب الفلسطيني حيث شاركت الشهيدة في العديد من المؤسسات والجمعيات المحلية والوطنية التي تعمل من اجل العدالة والحرية في فلسطين والعالم

عضو الهيئة الإدارية للجمعية الثقافية الاجتماعية الخيرية.
عضو الهيئة الإدارية لجمعية رعاية الأمومة والطفولة.
عضو مؤسس لنادي عيبال للثقافة والفن الشعبي.
عضو مؤسس لجمعية مكافحة التدخين والعقاقير الخطرة.
عضو مؤسس لحركة فلسطينيات من اجل البناء الديمقراطي في فلسطين.
عضو فاعل في اللجان الشعبية لمحافظة نابلس.

نؤكد أن الشهيدة شادن قتلت بدم بارد، وكان قتلها اغتيالا مع سبق الإصرار والترصد. يعتقد البعض خطأ أن الشهيدة استشهدت برصاصة طائشة وهذا ليس صحيحا. لقد أطلق جنود الاحتلال خمسة عشرة رصاصة على الأقل على الشهيدة وعلى زوجها وابنها اللذين نجيا بقدر من الله سبحانه وتعالى. الرصاصة الأولى كانت موجهة إلى رأس الشهيدة وأخطأتها بعشرة سنتيمترات ولكن الرصاصة الثانية أصابت جسدها الطاهر إصابة مباشرة في خاصرتها اليسرى وكانت من النوع المتفجر المحرم دوليا مما أدى إلى استشهادها على الفور. هذا وقد اعترف الجيش الإسرائيلي عبر وسائل الإعلام بأنه أطلق النار ولكنه قال أن الشهيدة أصيبت بالخطأ. لا يمكن لعاقل أن يصدق أن يتم إطلاق خمسة عشرة رصاصة على هدف معين من مسافة 25 مترا بالخطأ. هذا هو الإرهاب بعينه.. هذا هو الجبن بعينه... هذه هي إحدى جرائم الاحتلال الإسرائيلي ضد شعبنا الأعزل. لقد قاومت الشهيدة شادن الاحتلال بالطرق السلمية وكرست حياتها لمساعدة المتضررين من الاحتلال ولكن عنصرية الاحتلال وفاشيته أرادت أن تسكت صوتها المطالب دائما بحرية شعبها واستقلاله.

In the spring of 2008 she received tenure at Boise State University, but quit her job in order to accept a position at An Najah National University in Nablus, Palestine. He snapped his fingers and the other one shot,
All of what it is became what is not,
Love became hate, life became death,
As Mother of All let out her last breath…
All of humanity froze,
The "Iron Fist" killed the most beautiful rose…
A surgeon of Ear, Throat, and Nose,
Stood by and watched the love of forty years
End in a river of tears…

Yet it makes the heart move
With hope
With desire…
How can a distant fire
Calm the fire inside?!
How can a single fish bring down the tide?

No where to hide
Time to respond:
Close your eyes
Count to seven
A 'shooting heart'
From earth to heaven.

He shook my hand for the first time
Few of his fingers were missing
Compensated by a beautiful smile
The kind that makes you go the extra mile…

A year later his arm was missing
The beautiful smile remained
The more he lost
The more we gained!

Fadi is now all missing
Entered earth on a journey

I write to tell my soul that you have the possibility of not being alone. I write to allow my inner voice to come out, so I can see it, touch it, and maybe understand it. I write so as to feel the limits of my being and to see where it intersects with other beings, somewhat like Venn diagrams. I write to allow the air to come in to my hidden wounds to avoid spiritual gangrene. I write to find love; to find my soul mate…

It happened for the first time almost thirty years ago, at the age of 11. I was laying in my bed just about to sleep, and then suddenly sat and received few words. I say 'received' because I am not sure I had total control over the process that brought these words to my tongue and lips:

I will read and dissolve in the meaning of reading,
I will write and dissolve my ideas in the tunes of my poetry,
And I will sing for the joyful nightingale to forget my sorrows…
And I will be happy for death is the wedding of every human being…

It felt good, magical, unexplainable… where exactly did these words come from, and how did they surface or appear suddenly to the realm of consciousness…

Now after so many years, I say that these words were brought to me by the flicker of wings of a mystical butterfly, and my young soul resonated with the waves…

Many things happened since then… and I moved from the land of boyhood to the domain of men… too soon I must add,
And events that occurred almost made me mad…
Three bullets hit me when I was fifteen,
The pain was unbearable,
Difficult for you to know what I mean…
I was tortured on my wounds when I was sixteen,
They whipped me with electrical wiring,
Put me in a room full of sewage,
But I came out clean!

Many things happened since then, in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and in 2010...
The future is already here…
This might sound crazy or queer…
I write to calm my fear
Of history repeating itself,
And that I won't have enough stitches for new wounds,
Or strong legs faster than bullets,
And seconds that last longer than minutes…!

A State of Love

One state, two states, or no state,
Zionism, what a fate...
They caught the bait, and continued the hate,
Can they keep this rate... of ethnic cleansing!

Israel the "Jewish State", 60 years too late...
In the Middle East "the only democracy",
What a hypocrisy!
Can't they see our blood filling the Jordan River?
A wound oozing forever!

A State of Love the only solution,
Yes we say to spiritual cleansing,
No we say to ethnic cleansing,
"All in and no one out" at the top of my lungs I shall shout...
Refugees must come back, a just society with no doubt.

One State, No hate,
A State of Love,
Blessed from the above...
The children dance, happy in a trance,
This is our last chance...

Sixty years and counting,
Anger in my being is mounting.

Sixty years and counting,
The child in me is shouting:
I want to run, to fly, to sing, to cry,
To walk, talk, write on the blackboard with a chalk:
"End this bloody occupation..."

Sixty years and counting!
Nablus the city of goodness,
A wounded witness to this “bloody occupation...”

No need for wake up calls,
The tanks come on time,
Go on time,
And leave you no time to plan your time…
But can these tanks kill the thyme… of Ebal and Jirzim?

Kneel to these monsters they tell us everyday,
But only to Allah we kneel when we pray,
Another sixty thousand years will not change what I say.

Tanks do not grow on mountains but olives do.
Tanks do not grow on mountains but Palestinians do.
I am an olive and my blood is oil,
My flesh is this sacred soil,
My breath the wind of the Mediterranean,
My eyes make the sea blue.

Sixty years and the fascist can go to hell,
The mosque will say Allah Akbar,
The Church will ring its bell.

(Let there be light) is a phrase that comes from the third verse of the book of Genesis in the King James Bible: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness (From Wikipedia encyclopedia).

** Then Israel was established as the agent of darkness on this earth and as a main patron of evil!
We are the “Warriors of Light” who are fighting against the oppression and the darkness that Israel is trying to impose on Palestine and other areas of the world....

Breaking News: Israeli soldiers seriously injure a Palestinian worshiper in Nablus, Friday Jan 4, 2008

Israeli soldiers opened fire on Palestinians on their way to Friday prayer seriously injuring Nablus resident Ahmad Mohammad Abu Hantash in the head. The incident happened at noon as worshipers were heading to Al Shuhada Mosque in the western part of Nablus. As worshipers were entering the mosque an Israeli armored vehicle opened fire hitting Mr. Abu Hantash in the back of his head with three rubber-coated metal bullets causing extensive damage to his brain and neck. He is currently undergoing surgery in Nablus Specialty Hospital located near the mosque in an effort to save his life. Several witnesses say that the shooting was unprovoked and expressed their anger and frustration for the Israeli Army complete disregard to human life and the sanctity of holy places. One of the worshipers who was walking with Mr. Abu Hantash said “I was walking with Ahmad to the mosque and suddenly I heard a gunshot and saw Ahmad fall beside me, I was horrified to see his blood splashing all over the ground, and did not know why the army shot at us, we ducked for cover and when the Israeli jeep left we rushed Ahmad to the nearby Specialty Hospital.”
Ahmad Abu Hantash is a 35-year old Palestinian worker, married with two children, Fadi, 4 years old, and Hadi, three months old.
The Israeli Army has been conducting a major invasion into Nablus since the dawn of Thursday, Jan 3, 2008, and the operation is still ongoing. More than 45 Palestinians have been injured in the past 24 hours, and the Israeli army arrested 20 Palestinians.

Beloved sisters, brothers, family, friends, and colleagues,

May you have a blessed Eid Al Adha, merry Christmas, and a happy New Year...

Be true to the voice that comes from within...
Be Love for Love is the only way
That leads to that place where you do not have to say… a word... to be understood…
That leads to that bed in which you can sleep and dream like a baby… :-)
Be gentle with nature and nature will be gentle with you…
Slow down and feel yourself… do not overwhelm yourself with too many unnecessary inputs… first things first… do not sell the long-term for the short-term… walk with grace…your are the steward of Allah on Earth… join hands and energies with other Lovers that have understood the Way… allow for the synergies of Love to carry us all to the higher consciousness that will allow us to heal the bleeding wounds and the broken hearts…. And smile… let your whole Being smile… and do not underestimate the power of those sweet words you tell to your friends… the Arabs say “The good word comes out and the bad word comes out”…. So make it the good one :-) But if you hear a bad word that hurts you, learn how to forgive…

I pray to Allah almighty to protect you all and to gather us all on the right path… to unite us in the cause of peace…to forsake selfishness and be good to each other…

Our great prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) said:
لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه
“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî]

Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) also said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say something good or remain silent.”

Allah almighty says in the Quran: “By time! Surely the human being is at loss. Except for those who have faith and do righteous deeds and exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to patience.” [Sûrah al-`Asr]

On the road back to the beginning

I am in Amman, Jordan, getting ready to go to Greece to attend an international conference on public administration where I will present a paper entitled "Israeli Territoriality and the Predicament of the Palestinian Public Sector."
InshAllah I will stand on the hill of the Acropolis and look in a southeastern direction towards Palestine, my mother, you, and the wound that is me, my people, and all of humanity.
I will resume being a philosopher in few hours! That is how all philosophers are: they oscillate between being nothing and something, between shallowness and depth, between lust and virtue, between warmth and coldness, between the I and the You.
It is OK, this oscillation will certainly calm down soon. The passing of the torch from one hand to the other will remind me of the origins of fire. That is where my focus must be: the origin of divine energy. So do not leave yourself in the dark, keep searching for the light, but do not lose your grace during the search. Let your passion make you glow like sun rays off white snow.
Cleanse your heart from ill feelings and let love permeate all of its rooms. Write a love poem, it has always proved to be a panacea for deception, dishonesty, and uncertainty. Pray for the healing of your suffering and hers. The Lord of all hears and sees all, and his compassion and forgiveness is larger than all seas and oceans.
So let your body and soul sail through the Aegean sea to Athena. Tell your beloved that you are now Odysseus, and this is the 33th beginning of the Palestinian Odyssey. Pray for my safe return to you my beloved "Ithaca".

Writing myself to the Universe

After many months of self inhibition, indecisiveness, and procrastination I have started this blog to document myself and share myself with the Universe. I am hoping that my writing will help me organize the flood of thoughts and emotions that are being trapped inside me, which, if not released will continue to cause me unbearable suffering, and might explode, or dissipate, and thus lose immense potential energy that can be utilized in the mitigation of the harsh human conditions in Palestine, and around the world.
So I am writing for me and you. I am writing for all. I am writing for those who listen and those who do not! I am writing for and against! I am writing the last and first! Things I heard, saw, touched, tasted, and smelled; Things that hurt me and things that made me happy; Things that I am hoping for and those that I dread.

I am writing my inner voice. I am writing my inner eye. I am writing things that make me shy. I am writing things that make me proud. I am writing things that others told me, and things others would not tell. I am writing about heaven and hell. I am writing about Palestine; about my city Nablus: sleeping and waking up between two mountains, Ibal and Jirzim.

I am a Spiritual Nomad, the one and only, the legendary Sindbad. I am the Palestinian Superman! I am also the Palestinian Dinosaur fighting hard against physical, spiritual, political, economic, and cultural extinction being imposed on me and my people by the racist and oppressive policies of the state of Israel and Zionism.
